Another common type of residential septic system is a septic tank and seepage tank(s). Depending on the area you live in, you may find high-mound systems, treatment systems or Pinelands systems. Lastly, if your house is older than 20 years, you may find a cesspool. These systems are now considered obsolete.","name":"Answer2","@id":"https:\/\/www.atlanticsittonservices.com\/faq\/#Answer2"},"@id":"https:\/\/www.atlanticsittonservices.com\/faq\/#Question2"},{"@type":"Question","name":"Is it good or helpful to put an additive in my septic system?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Yes, depending on the use of the system. As facilities are utilized inside the home or business, water and solids exit through the inlet line into the septic tank. The solids will sink to the bottom while the water will fill up to the baffle line. Once the water reaches the baffle line, it will seep through the outlet line to the distribution box (d-box) and then into the absorption area. The purpose of pumping out the septic tank on a routine basis is to remove the sludge, as over time, these solids can break up into smaller particles, float to the top of the tank and be distributed into the absorption area, inhibiting its ability to function as designed. The absorption area is designed to absorb the water being introduced to it through layers of stone, sand, and soil. Traditional septic systems, with the proper maintenance, typically function as designed between 20 and 25 years. Septic systems will not cease to function suddenly or all at once, barring immediate severe damage. Septic systems, specifically the absorption area, will slowly start to fail by absorbing the water at a slower rate. Over time, this can cause pooling in the yard, backups in the home, odors, etc. This can also cause the tank to exceed its capacity as a septic tank\u2019s capacity is measured by the volume the tank can hold up to the baffle line. When a septic system starts to fail and water cannot be absorbed at the rate it is originally designed to, the tank will fill to above the baffle line or flood back though the inlet line, or both, as it has nowhere else to go.","name":"Answer11","@id":"https:\/\/www.atlanticsittonservices.com\/faq\/#Answer11"},"@id":"https:\/\/www.atlanticsittonservices.com\/faq\/#Question11"}],"publisher":{"@id":"https:\/\/www.atlanticsittonservices.com\/"},"name":"FAQs","url":"https:\/\/www.atlanticsittonservices.com\/faq\/","@id":"https:\/\/www.atlanticsittonservices.com\/faq\/"},{"@context":"https:\/\/schema.org","@type":"BreadcrumbList","@id":"https:\/\/www.atlanticsittonservices.com\/faq\/#BreadcrumbList","itemListElement":[{"@type":"ListItem","position":1,"name":"FAQ","item":"https:\/\/www.atlanticsittonservices.com\/faq\/#breadcrumbitem"}]}]
